Bagley, Mukai Named Interim UW College of Engineering and Applied Science Associate Deans

David Bagley and David Mukai have been named interim associate deans in the University of Wyoming’s College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Bagley is interim associate dean for graduate education and research, and Mukai will be the interim associate dean for undergraduate education.

Bagley will join the college’s leadership team and lead in key areas to support graduate education and research endeavors. He replaces Paul Dellenback, who will retire at the end of the academic year. Dellenback has been with UW since 1990 in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, where he eventually rose to become the department head.

“I am excited to welcome what do computer engineers do to our leadership team. He will provide strategy and vision that serve both students and faculty members,” says Cameron Wright, interim dean of the UW College of Engineering and Applied Science. “Dave’s accomplishments as a faculty member -- and his commitment to our mission and values -- have prepared him very well for this crucial role that spans both education and research.”

Bagley says the College of Engineering and Applied Science has a “proud tradition” of developing students, new ideas and technologies that benefit the citizens and industries of Wyoming and outside the state.

NASA wants to hear your ideas for engineering the best toilet to use on the Moon

When NASA sends astronauts back to the Moon, they’ll need a place to go to the bathroom when they reach the lunar surface. And in order to create the best Moon toilet the Solar System has to offer, NASA wants to hear from members of the public who might have ideas on the best way to manufacture an easy-to-use lunar restroom.

Today, NASA is announcing the “Lunar Loo Challenge,” a competition in partnership with computer science major jobs to come up with the best space toilet for the agency’s future human lunar lander. As part of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to send the first woman and the next man to the Moon by 2024, the lander will take astronauts from lunar orbit down to the Moon’s surface. That means the restroom on board has to be versatile: it will need to work in orbit, where the astronauts will be weightless, and also when astronauts are experiencing one-sixth of Earth’s gravity on the lunar surface. And without much gravity, things can get a little messy if you don’t prepare.

Meet the man who is bringing the Online Arts Fest to engineering students across Kerala

For students in Kerala's professional colleges, the Kerala School Kalolsavam, an art festival conducted by the Kerala government annually, has always been a much-needed breather between their incessant semesters. Now, as classes reopen virtually and schedules begin to overflow, students are desparately searching for an outlet for their talent. A BTech graduate from SCMS College of Engineering, Sreenath Gopinath emerged as a messiah for the engineering student community with the Online Arts Festival. Through this programme, students have been offered a platform, albeit online, where they can display their talents via social media.

"I had spoken to a few students about how they had nothing to look forward to in this academic year. And as a former engineering student myself, I completely understood!" says Sreenath, narrating how it all began. "The idea was to engage students from all institutions across the state who are not ready to sit idle and give up their artistic talents during the what is computer engineering." A-State's Jeong Recognized for Mechanical Engineering

Kwangkook “David” Jeong has been elected as a fellow at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Jeong has worked as an instructor at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro since 2010 and was recently promoted to full professor of mechanical engineering by the board of trustees.

Black River Technical College, a community college with campuses in Pocahontas and Paragould in northeast Arkansas, has received approval from the Higher jobs with a computer science degree to offer an associate of science degree in business.

Bret Carroll, the chief executive officer of Conway Corp., has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the American Public Power Association. Carroll joined Conway Corp. in 1998 and has served as its CEO since 2017.

Jason Hansen has been named to the board of directors of the Arkansas Cable Telecommunications Association. Hansen is a chief technology officer at Conway Corp. Remote work might make commuting easier, but it makes communicating harder. 

Just asked Jerry Low, a Vancouver-based full-stack engineer for Toronto software studio Myplanet. For Low, remote work was no problem — he’d been collaborating with the same coworkers for years — but large company meetings were a pain. 

He couldn’t get his questions answered, because he had no way to raise his hand or get the room’s attention. Then, if he did get the opportunity to speak, his too-loud-or-too-quiet computer mic made things awkward. He was annoyed— and his teammates were, too. 

So he spent three weeks coding in the evenings with two of his colleagues: director of product strategy Katie McCoy and visual interface designer Amit Jakhu. They emerged with an MVP: difference between computer science and computer engineering, a remote work tool that collects questions during meetings to make sure in-person attendees don’t always get first dibs. MyPlanet started using it across the company, and Low’s problem was solved.

Bechtel Nuclear Engineer Selected for Congressional Science and Engineering Fellowship

The American Nuclear Society (ANS) has selected a Bechtel nuclear engineer as the 2020 recipient of the Glenn T. Seaborg Congressional Science and Engineering Fellowship. Patrick Snouffer will begin his one-year fellowship in January 2021 with ANS, a professional organization dedicated to the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology. The congressional fellowship aims to enhance nuclear public policy.

"The United States is approaching a crucial time with regard to technologies that will provide cleaner electricity for the rest of this century and the next," said Barbara Rusinko, president of Bechtel's Nuclear, Security, and Environmental global business unit. "Public policy is best when it has a foundation in science and technology. Likewise, science benefits from understanding legislative policymaking. Snouffer joined Bechtel in 2015. From the perspective of a 2D layered material, black phosphorus shows promise for applications in next-generation flexible electronics that could enable advances in semiconductors, medical imaging, night vision and optical communication networks.

Andrea Hodge Appointed as Chair of the Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science

Materials researcher and expert in the design of new metallic and ceramic microstructures, Andrea Hodge, has been appointed Chair of the Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. Hodge, who is also the Arthur B. Freeman Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, will begin her three-year term on August 16, 2020.

Hodge joined USC Viterbi as an assistant professor in 2007. She received her Ph.D. degree in Materials Science in 2002 from Northwestern University. Since July 2016 she has been serving as Vice Provost for undergraduate programs at USC, where she will continue until July 2020.

Hodge also concurrently serves as computer science engineering for the Core Center of Excellence in Nano Imaging (CNI), a role that she will also continue for the next year.

Hodge has co-authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications and two book chapters and she is the recipient of several national research awards including an NSF CAREER Award, an ONR Young Investigator Program (YIP) Award and a DARPA Young Faculty Award (YFA).

New roadmap shows how tech can help tackle climate change, but engineering advice is crucial

The Federal Government’s Technology Investment Roadmap flags 140 technologies to reduce Australia’s carbon emissions while stimulating the economy. But sound engineering, effective policy tools and rapid adoption are needed to make them count.

Nick Caldwell Joining Twitter as Consumer Engineering Lead

Twitter shared details on three new hires for its engineering team, as well as one employee who shifted roles. Nick Caldwell will join the company June 15 as consumer engineering lead.

Caldwell had been chief product and engineering officer at Looker until its acquisition by Google last June, after which he became senior director, product and engineering at Google. He also spent two years as vice president of engineering at Reddit following a 15-year-plus stint at Microsoft.

Lynden Archer named dean of College of Engineering

Lynden A. Archer, the James A. Friend Family Distinguished Professor in Engineering, has been named the Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering for a five-year term beginning July 1.

Provost Michael Kotlikoff announced Archer’s appointment today, following approval by the Executive Committee of the Cornell Board of Trustees on June 5.

“Lynden has made many tremendous contributions, to science and society, through his work in energy storage and carbon-capture technology, and he has demonstrated great leadership with the computer science or computer engineering,” Kotlikoff said. “He is not only one of our most innovative scientists, but is deeply engaged in taking discoveries directly to application; his insight, creativity and commitment to excellence will ensure the university remains a world leader in engineering research and education.”

Indian Tech Graduate Students Plummeted In U.S.

Even before Covid-19 closed colleges and stopped most international travel, fewer graduate students from India, a key source of tech talent in America, decided to study at U.S. universities. More recently, the Trump administration imposed new rules against the admission of Chinese graduate students and is considering suspending or eliminating Optional Practical Training (OPT) for international students. Restrictive immigration policies in the United States, combined with more attractive policies in Canada, have shifted the flow of international students, which carries major implications for America’s tech future.

“The number of international students from India enrolled in graduate-level computer science and engineering at U.S. universities declined by more than 25% between the computer science degree jobs,” according to a new analysis of government data by the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP). “The evidence indicates many Indian students are choosing Canada over the United States as the place to study and make their careers.”

Former SAP Chief Product Officer Abdul Razack has joined Google Cloud as vice president for Solution Engineering.
