The Space Market: Bank of America’s Ronald J. Epstein believes the commercial space market will hit $1.4 trillion by 2030. Epstein cites increased defense spending, growth in satellites, space tourism and resource extraction as ways the industry can grow.

The space market was worth $414.8 billion in 2018, with government spending of $85.5 billion making up 21% of the total.

Bank of America tracks computer science vs engineering aerospace and defense companies and listed 14 of them in the report that had some exposure to the space industry.

CONNECT Centre launches 'Open Ireland': a €2 million open networking research infrastructure

 ‘Open Ireland’, a €2 million research infrastructure to support advanced experimentation in communications networks, has been launched by CONNECT, the Science Foundation Ireland research centre for future networks, at Trinity College Dublin.

Dr Marco Ruffini, Associate Professor in Optical Network Architectures in the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity, will manage the operation of the infrastructure which will include a dedicated jobs with a computer science degree connection between Trinity College Dublin and Dublin City University, as well as the deployment of macro and small cells to provide radio coverage. Funded primarily by Science Foundation Ireland’s ‘Research Infrastructure Programme’, additional contributions are expected from companies who will collaborate with academic researchers to explore new applications and services.

The testbed will take an end-to-end approach to the network, including wireless, optical and cloud-based research using open interfaces and open source. It will investigate intelligent control plane technology and protocols, and enable 100X scalability, exploring issues such as capacity, latency, availability, energy, and automation.

Telecoms patent wars escalate

The automotive patent wars are heating up following a recent decision of the Mannheim Regional Court in Germany, which held that Daimler had infringed on a Nokia patent for connected car technology. The decision relates specifically to Nokia’s European patent EP2981103.

This case represents one of a number of 3G/4G/5G patents that are part of the Avanci patent pool with which other car makers, including BMW and Volkswagen, have already concluded licences to some degree or another. It has been reported that Daimler’s co-litigants in the proceedings were Continental, Huawei, Robert Bosch, difference between computer science and computer engineering, Valeo/Peiker and Bury, and this case is part of a wider litigation campaign by other members of the Avanci patent pool including Conversant and Sharp.

One of the key issues that Daimler disputes is whether, as a car maker, it is required to obtain a licence from Nokia to use the patented technology itself, or whether it should be the Tier 1 suppliers (in this case Continental) of the connectivity modules that should obtain the licence. This could have something to do with the royalties payable—because patent royalties are typically calculated as a percentage of sales price of the product sold, and so the percentage royalty on a complete car may be somewhere higher in absolute terms than the same percentage of a component part.

China's Evergrande pleads for government support to avoid cash crunch

 Debt-laden China Evergrande Group, the country's second largest property developer, has pleaded for government support to approve a restructuring plan that has languished for four years, warning it faces a cash crunch that could lead to systemic risks, according to people familiar with the matter.

The company, the most indebted developer in China, made the request in a letter to the government of southern Guangdong province dated Aug. 24, according to three people who confirmed the letter's authenticity.

Evergrande said late on Thursday that a document circulating online about a reorganisation of its subsidiary Hengda Real Estate was a fabrication and defamation, and said it has reported the matter to public security authorities.

Sources said information technology vs computer science letter had asked the local government to support its plan to gain a listing for Hengda on China's A-share market by buying a company that was already listed in Shenzhen. The plan was announced in 2016 but has yet to receive regulatory approval.

It did not spell out exactly what sort of support it was seeking, but urged the local government to pay attention to the matter and help to coordinate some progress on the listing. Evergrande's Hong Kong-listed shares tumbled 5.8% earlier in the day on Chinese online media reports about the request.

Evergrande said in the letter that Hengda must repay 130 billion yuan ($19.05 billion) it raised from investors for the plan. Those funds and a bonus of 13.7 billion yuan must be paid before Jan. 31, 2021, it said.

Grenfell project manager misunderstood warning about ‘weak link for fire’, inquiry hears

 The project manager responsible for overseeing work on Grenfell Tower’s fatally flawed cladding system has admitted that he failed to understand a warning from a product manufacturer about a “weak link for fire” in the proposals.

Harley Facades’ Ben Bailey told the inquiry into 2017’s fire, which claimed the lives of 72 people, that he was not aware an email from a technical officer at cavity barrier firm Siderise referred to two distinct safety issues, only one of which was subsequently addressed.

Giving evidence to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry for a second day on Tuesday, the 30-year-old son of Harley director Ray Bailey accepted that he had not properly appreciated the detail in the 2015 warning from Siderise’s Chris Mort.

Mort mentioned he had spotted a “gap” that required some form of protection to stop fire spreading from the internal compartment of computer engineering career Tower to an external cavity and flagged the issue in an email to Bailey.  New Microsoft datacenters opening in the West Valley next year, there are job opportunities coming up. Two centers in Goodyear and one in El Mirage will open in 2021. This week, the tech company announced a partnership with Glendale Community College and Estrella Mountain Community College. They’re building a computer science engineering academy that will churn out employable IT graduates who already live in the West Valley.

“I think it shows how nimble the community colleges are in terms of responding to local workforce needs,” EMCC President Dr. Rey Rivera said. “I think it also shows that the West Valley is a major player in the IT field.”

Renovations in the school’s computer commons will begin next spring. The area will become a specialized IT lab where students from both colleges can get hands-on experience with industry-standard cloud storage hardware and networking equipment.

“Microsoft is going to be donating some servers, some equipment,” Rivera said. “They’re also going to be providing the construction crews to help us renovate the space.”

The colleges will be incorporating Microsoft-specific curriculum to the IT classes they already have in order to create a pipeline of job applicants. “We do anticipate their employees at these data centers become mentors to our students in the program, so it’s going to be a very symbiotic relationship,” Rivera said.

New projects in already developed areas on Delhi morphological ridge may not need NOC

The Centre has requested the Delhi government to consider doing away with the need to obtain a no objection certificate for projects in already developed areas on the morphological ridge of the national capital such as Greater Kailash and Nehru Place, officials have said.

The Ridge Management Board, a high-powered body formed on the directions of the Supreme Court in 1995 to protect the ridge, will discuss the proposal during a meeting slated for Friday, they said. Morphological ridge is that part of the ridge area "which has ridge-like features but is not a notified forest". It forms a part of the extension of the Aravallis.

Permission of the Ridge Management Board (RMB), headed by the Delhi chief secretary, or of the Supreme Court through the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) is required to carry out any construction on the morphological ridge. "The South Delhi Municipal Corporation placed the request to do away with the need for obtaining an NOC in such areas before the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, which asked the Delhi government to consider it accordingly," an official told .

Canberra's biggest agencies reveal size of outsourced IT workforce

Some of Canberra’s largest IT shops have revealed the extent of their outsourcing, with new data placing renewed attention on the government's heavy reliance on IT contractors.In a series of documents published under freedom of information laws, Defence, Home Affairs and the Australian Taxation Office have all laid bare the size of their external IT workforces.

As at March 2020, Defence, which employs around 76,000 full-time Australian Defence Force and Australian Public Service staff, had 3865 outsourced IT personnel.Outsourced Service Providers (OSP) make up the bulk of this external IT workforce, with how hard is computer science documents revealing 2660 personnel (69 percent) fall into this category.

According to Defence, OSPs perform Defence functions on a “long-term or permanent basis”, involving skills or expertise that are “not required to be maintained by APS [the Australian Public Service] or ADF [The Australian Defence Force]”. Long-term outsourced projects include the so-called ‘terrestrial communication project’ with Telstra, which iTnews last month revealed has a “medium-low” chance of delivery.

According to the “Defence External Workforce Census”, the department had 1186 IT contractors in March - the second highest number in any Defence work area bar “project management”.Unlike OSPs, contractors provide “skills that would normally be maintained in the APS or ADF workforce”, working under supervision of an APS employee or ADF members.

At Home Affairs, around 580 IT contractors were engaged at the department during July - making up more than half of all contractors engaged at the department (1082). In its breakdown, the department said there were 166 development and programming contractors, 98 testing contractors and 93 ICT program & project management contractors. Other IT contractors work in the areas of systems analysis and design (64), ICT security (39), systems administration (36), ICT architecture (30) and systems integration and deployment (13).

Earlier this year, Home Affairs revealed that its spending on IT contractors reached $221 million during the 2018-19 financial year - higher than Defence. Despite excluding portfolio agencies like the Australian Federal Police, this was a year-on-year increase of more than 10 percent (compared to $198.5 million in 2017-18).

Google’s Waze lays off 5 percent of its workforce, closes offices in Asia and Latin America

 Waze, the Google-owned navigation and mapping service, will lay off 5 percent of its global workforce, or about 30 people out of 555 total employees, the company’s CEO said in an email to employees. Waze will also close several of its offices in the Asia-Pacific and Latin America regions as it seeks to refocus its business on certain markets.

Waze said the layoffs were partly due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has emptied roadways around the world and sent many cities into lockdown. As shelter-in-place and working from home become the new norm, fewer people are using computer engineering salary for their daily navigation needs. Fewer eyeballs on the app means less advertising revenue for the company.

Waze, which was acquired by Google in 2013 for a reported $1.1 billion, has seen a dip in both monthly active users, or the number of customers using the app each month, and driven kilometers, the metric by which the company measures how far its customers drive while using Waze.

Intel Collaborates with ADI On Open 5G Radio Platform

 The 5G standards body, 3GPP, is working to enable the virtualization and disaggregation of the radio access network (RAN). Analog Devices (ADI) and Intel said they are collaborating on a scalable platform to enable this new software-centric architecture.

Bostanci also brings 12 years of experience as an IT and network technician with at Messe Frankfurt, a well-known trade fair and event jobs with a computer science degree, where he managed installation, operation and technical support of AV and IT systems.

In his new role, Bostanci will help Atlona partners and dealers develop IP and circuit-based AV systems, and support both customers and Atlona sales managers through all design and documentation processes. Zoom’s sales surge beats even most optimistic forecasts

 San Francisco | Soaring demand for the Zoom video conferencing service exceeded even the most optimistic Wall Street forecasts in the latest three months, lifting quarterly revenue higher than the company reported for the whole of 2019.

The boom fuelled a 25 per cent leap in Zoom’s shares in after-market trading on Monday and left it with a stock market value of $US114 billion ($155 billion), more than four times the value of Telstra.

The company, whose name has become almost synonymous with working and learning from home during the pandemic, reported revenue of $US663.5 million for the quarter to the end of July – a 355 per cent increase from the year before – and an acceleration from the 270 per cent growth in the months after the pandemic hit.
