Wi-Fi 6 is a faster wireless technology

 Wi-Fi 6 is a faster wireless technology, but it is also more secure because it is much more resistant to an attacker who wants to listen in on your device's connection to the access point or router. This new security protocol standard that Wi-Fi 6 uses is called WPA3 and was introduced a few years ago as an experimental feature in 802.11ac, or Wi-Fi 5 routers and APs. If you can turn this on in your existing equipment, possibly through a firmware update, absolutely do it. 

WPA3 is more secure than the previous WPA2 (which replaced WEP, and you absolutely should not have devices or equipment that use this in your home or small business), because it prevents the wardriving attacker from recording when your devices connect to the access point, playing back that connection on their computer and cracking your passwords offline. 

The easiest way to put Wi-Fi 6 on your home network is to get a Wi-Fi 6 access point and connect it to your existing routers, such as using an internet provider that gives you a router needed for connecting to their broadband technology, like AT&T or computer engineer vs computer science. You can also set many third-party routers to Bridge Mode or run what is referred to as Double NAT. In my opinion, a double NAT should be avoided if possible due to the additional complexity it introduces.

LTE & 5G for Critical Communications 2020-2030: Opportunities, Challenges, Strategies & Forecasts

 For nearly a century, the critical communications industry has relied on narrowband LMR (Land Mobile Radio) networks for mission-critical voice and low-speed data services. Over time, these systems have evolved from relatively basic analogue radios to digital communications technologies, such as P25 (Project 25) and TETRA, to provide superior voice quality, end-to-end encryption and other advanced features. However, due to their inherent bandwidth and design limitations, even the most sophisticated digital LMR networks are unable to support mobile broadband and data-driven industrial IoT applications that have become vital for public safety, military, utilities, transportation, oil and gas, mining and other segments of the critical communications industry.

The 3GPP-defined LTE and 5G NR standards have emerged as the leading candidates to fill this void. Over the last decade, a plethora of dedicated, hybrid commercial-private and MVNO-based computer science and engineering networks have been deployed to deliver critical communications broadband capabilities - in addition to the use of commercial mobile operator networks - for application scenarios as diverse as PTT group communications, real-time mobile video surveillance, AR/VR (Augmented & Virtual Reality), wirelessly connected robotics, and automation in industrial environments. These networks range from nationwide public safety broadband platforms such as the United States' FirstNet (First Responder Network), South Korea's Safe-Net (National Disaster Safety Communications Network) and Britain's ESN (Emergency Services Network) to regional cellular networks covering the service footprint of utility companies and localized wireless systems in settings such as railroads, airports, maritime ports, oil and gas production facilities, remote mining sites, factories and warehouses.

61% of organisations in India lack structured cybersecurity training

 A survey by Israel-based cybersecurity firm Cyberbit has revealed that nearly 61 percent of organisations in India do not have well-structured cybersecurity training modules for their employees.

The findings also indicated that 77 percent of cybersecurity professionals are working remotely versus 23 percent working on-premise or hybrid (i.e. they were travelling to the office at least once a week).

While working remotely, more than 50 percent of how much do computer engineers make professionals admitted that no cybersecurity training was provided by their organisations.

The survey also showed that 89 percent of the organisations still rely on classroom training, external certificates and tabletop exercises that emphasize theory and have limited practical exposure.

The survey also brought to light the fact that more than 90 percent of organisations are not exposing their cybersecurity teams to the MITRE ATT&CK Framework in India. MITRE ATT&CK is a collection of attacker behaviours displayed across the cyberattack lifecycle.

Palo Alto Networks extends cloud native security platform with new modules

 Palo Alto Networks has announced the availability of Prisma Cloud 2.0, including four new cloud security modules, thus extending its Cloud Native Security Platform (CNSP). A CNSP is designed to secure multi- and hybrid-cloud environments and cloud native applications integrating security across the full DevOps lifecycle.

The announcement integrates Aporeto and builds on the November 2019 introduction of Palo Alto Networks Prisma Cloud. The new modules include the following.

Data Security delivers data loss prevention (DLP) capabilities, offering discovery, classification and malware detection for AWS S3.

Enterprises operating in regulated industries can leverage Data Security when adopting the cloud to help meet various compliance requirements.

City of Pella to seek bids for $1.5M fiber optic line

The City of Pella will seek bids to construct 34 miles of a fiber optic line for the upcoming telecommunications utility. The fiber optic line will run from Pella Fiber to Unity Point Hospital in Grinnell, or the city’s “Point of Presence," to provide bandwidth.

The project for the fiber optic line will include labor, materials and construction, estimated at $1,568,646. The bidding process for the project will begin Aug. 7, and a public hearing date was set for Aug. 18 to award a contract to potential bidders. According to City Administrator Mike Nardini, construction for the project is slated to begin Sept. 3 and be completed by Oct. 22 of this year.

Engineering care: A designer’s perspective as a COVID-19 backliner

As non-essential personnel in the first weeks of the pandemic, my thoughts were the same as everybody else: “Where the hell do I get a toilet paper?” I didn’t have a lot of selfless and noble ideas back then to fight the virus. I was more concerned about my trips being canceled, and the Black Widow film being rescheduled from May to November. Admittedly, I had brushed off COVID-19’s threat, thinking that I wouldn’t even have anything to contribute, not being in the medical field. Obviously, I was very wrong.

As the weeks went by under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), the number of computer science engineering cases steadily climbed. The government continued to roll out cash assistance programs and national policies to combat the pandemic and its consequent tragedies. But implementation was a different matter altogether.

As lapses in the execution of these policies became evident, the public grew restless. Soon enough, hospitals cried out over their lack of necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), public transport drivers begged for work, and small business owners filed for bankruptcy. Complaints rolled in, creating an online ruckus on crisis mismanagement and the unjust decrees that bare latent interclass tensions within Philippine society.

Crystal wars: Research may lead to more efficient crystal engineering methods

A team of researchers at the University of Tokyo and Fudan University has studied the process of crystallization when more than one structural arrangement is possible. By reducing the noise from random fluctuations, they found that transient precursors of the various crystalline orderings coexist and compete with each other. This work may help lead to more efficient crystal engineering methods.

One of most popular exhibits of any geology museum is the crystal section. Large, flat, rectangular or tetrahedral faces of an elegant crystal reflect underlying molecular patterns. On closer inspection, some specimens turn out to be mosaics of different shapes, showing that the same atoms can arrange themselves in multiple ways, called is computer science engineering. In fact, all crystals are just repeating arrangements of atoms or larger particles that typically grow from smaller seeds. These seeds serve as initial templates that allow new particles to attach in the proper locations. Bagley, Mukai Named Interim UW College of Engineering and Applied Science Associate Deans

David Bagley and David Mukai have been named interim associate deans in the University of Wyoming’s College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Bagley is interim associate dean for graduate education and research, and Mukai will be the interim associate dean for undergraduate education.

Bagley will join the college’s leadership team and lead in key areas to support graduate education and research endeavors. He replaces Paul Dellenback, who will retire at the end of the academic year. Dellenback has been with UW since 1990 in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, where he eventually rose to become the department head.

“I am excited to welcome what do computer engineers do to our leadership team. He will provide strategy and vision that serve both students and faculty members,” says Cameron Wright, interim dean of the UW College of Engineering and Applied Science. “Dave’s accomplishments as a faculty member -- and his commitment to our mission and values -- have prepared him very well for this crucial role that spans both education and research.”

Bagley says the College of Engineering and Applied Science has a “proud tradition” of developing students, new ideas and technologies that benefit the citizens and industries of Wyoming and outside the state.

Andrea Hodge Appointed as Chair of the Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science

Materials researcher and expert in the design of new metallic and ceramic microstructures, Andrea Hodge, has been appointed Chair of the Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. Hodge, who is also the Arthur B. Freeman Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, will begin her three-year term on August 16, 2020.

Hodge joined USC Viterbi as an assistant professor in 2007. She received her Ph.D. degree in Materials Science in 2002 from Northwestern University. Since July 2016 she has been serving as Vice Provost for undergraduate programs at USC, where she will continue until July 2020.

Hodge also concurrently serves as computer science engineering for the Core Center of Excellence in Nano Imaging (CNI), a role that she will also continue for the next year.

Hodge has co-authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications and two book chapters and she is the recipient of several national research awards including an NSF CAREER Award, an ONR Young Investigator Program (YIP) Award and a DARPA Young Faculty Award (YFA).

New roadmap shows how tech can help tackle climate change, but engineering advice is crucial

The Federal Government’s Technology Investment Roadmap flags 140 technologies to reduce Australia’s carbon emissions while stimulating the economy. But sound engineering, effective policy tools and rapid adoption are needed to make them count.

To avoid the most devastating consequences of climate change, global emissions need to reach net zero by 2050. According to Engineers Australia Senior Policy Advisor Steve Rodgers, targeted technology investment in the wake of the pandemic can help.

Nick Caldwell Joining Twitter as Consumer Engineering Lead

Twitter shared details on three new hires for its engineering team, as well as one employee who shifted roles. Nick Caldwell will join the company June 15 as consumer engineering lead.

Caldwell had been chief product and engineering officer at Looker until its acquisition by Google last June, after which he became senior director, product and engineering at Google. He also spent two years as vice president of engineering at Reddit following a 15-year-plus stint at Microsoft.
